What we read in this article

Heat, agitation and the wrong drying method can shrink or felt a sweater. Hanging a knit while wet or in storage can stretch it, while rubbing creates pills. Read the full care label, handle the garment gently, and dry or store it flat when the label directs you to.

Why sweaters shrink stretch and pill

A sweater is a network of loops, so yarn can move when it becomes wet, warm or heavily agitated. Some knits relax and grow. Others tighten or felt. A loose, soft knit is usually easier to distort than a firm, tightly made one, but the care label, not a guess based on softness, sets the safe routine.

Pilling is different from shrinkage. It happens when rubbing draws loose fibers to the surface and tangles them into small balls. Woolmark identifies high-friction zones such as the underarms, sleeves, sides and elbows as common sites. Washing can add friction, but a shoulder bag, desk edge or seat belt can do it during ordinary wear.

Our counter is on Reseda Blvd across from the campus, so customers often drop off a sweater on the way to class or work and collect it on the way home.

Check the label and fiber content first

Read every line and symbol before deciding between a machine, hand washing and dry cleaning. The Federal Trade Commission requires care instructions to identify a safe regular-care method and to include warnings when part of that method could harm the garment. The instruction applies to the complete sweater, including trim, buttons, zippers, decorations and any lining.

The words matter. Dryclean Only means washing may damage the item. Dryclean without Only is not the same prohibition under FTC guidance, but it is still not permission to invent a wash routine. Follow every listed washing, drying and temperature direction. If the label is missing, unreadable or conflicts with delicate trim, ask for an assessment before testing the sweater at home.

Wash hand wash or dry clean by sweater type

Sweater type Home-care starting point Bring it in when
Wool merino or cashmere Follow the label. Hand wash only when allowed; do not rub or wring. Reshape and dry flat unless another method is stated. The label says dry-clean-only, a stain has set, trim is delicate, or the knit has felted.
Cotton knit Use the listed wash temperature and drying method. Support and reshape the piece while damp. The knit is structured, embellished, unstable in color or already distorted.
Acrylic polyester or blend Use the cycle and temperature on the label. Turn inside out when permitted to reduce rubbing. Pilling is paired with thinning, snagging, heat damage or a difficult stain.
Loose specialty knit Treat the label as the minimum rule. Support the whole garment when wet and dry flat if directed. The label is missing, the knit is very open, or dye, trim or shape has changed.
Mixed fiber or embellished Follow the complete label and the most restrictive instruction for the assembled garment. The fiber mix, decoration, adhesive or construction makes the safe method unclear.

A fiber name alone cannot settle the choice. Two wool sweaters can have different yarns, finishes, dyes, trims and construction, so their labels may prescribe different care.

Is your dryer ruining your sweater

A dryer is safe only when the care label permits tumble drying and gives the allowed heat. Heat and tumbling can change size or texture, and mechanical rubbing can add pilling. Woolmark advises drying wool flat unless its label specifically permits tumble drying. Do not use the dryer as an experiment to shrink a stretched sweater back into shape; the change can be uneven and permanent.

  1. Read the complete care label and fiber content before adding water, detergent or heat.
  2. If machine washing is allowed, close fasteners, turn the sweater inside out and use a mesh bag only when it will not crowd the load.
  3. Use the listed cycle and temperature. For hand washing, move the sweater gently through water without scrubbing, twisting or wringing.
  4. Press out water in a clean towel, reshape the sweater to its normal dimensions and dry it flat when directed.
  5. Fold the fully dry sweater for storage instead of leaving a heavy knit hanging from the shoulders.

Can shrinkage stretching or pilling be fixed

A slightly misshapen, washable sweater may improve when it is dampened according to the label, gently reshaped and dried flat. Severe felting is different. When fibers have locked together and the fabric feels dense, a full return to the original size may not be possible. Do not pull hard at a dry or fragile knit because that can strain seams and create thin areas.

Remove a few pills only when the knit is sound. Woolmark suggests lifting them by hand or using a gentle sweater comb or fabric shaver. Work on a flat surface, keep the tool away from loose yarns and stop if the fabric catches. Pilling paired with thinning or holes needs a repair assessment, not more shaving.

Questions we get at the counter

Can I unshrink a sweater?

Sometimes a small shape change in a washable knit can improve with label-safe dampening, gentle reshaping and flat drying. A severely felted sweater often cannot return to its former size because the fibers have locked together. Do not force the fabric or try repeated hot and cold cycles. Bring the sweater in if the material, label or safe stopping point is unclear.

Should cashmere always be dry cleaned?

No single rule covers every cashmere sweater. FTC guidance says a Dryclean Only label warns that washing may damage the garment. Some cashmere items carry a safe hand-wash instruction instead. Follow the exact label for that sweater, including water, drying and warning details. Trim, dye, structure or a set stain can also make an assessment the safer next step.

Can I shave pills off a sweater?

A clean sweater comb or fabric shaver can remove surface pills from a stable knit. Lay the sweater flat, work lightly and test a hidden area first. Keep the tool away from seams, embroidery, loose yarns and already-thin fabric. Stop if the knit catches or fuzzing increases. A hole, run or weak patch needs repair advice instead of further de-pilling.
